Tooth Fairy Ornie

This Tooth Fairy is ready to visit the next youngster getting ready to lose a baby tooth. She will use her trusty wand to magically transfer the tooth from under the youngster's pillow and deposit a coin in its place. The tooth will then be taken back to the Tooth Fairy factory where it will be turned into pixie dust. This special dust is what the Tooth Fairy uses to sprinkle on the heads of newborn babies so they can grow baby teeth when they get older too! It's not every fairy that is chosen to be a Tooth Fairy. It's a special job and this Tooth Fairy takes it very seriously.

The Tooth Fairy was created in my smoke free studio in sunny California. She measures 4 inches long by 3 inches wide and will come to you signed, dated and ready for display.

Casey, the Clown Fairy

Casey is all ready to head to the center ring under the Big Top!

He was created using my own hand made paper clay. His shoes, nose and flower were made with polymer clay.

Once cured, Casey was hand painted, using acrylic paint. Chalks and oils were then used to create highlights and shadows. Antiquing medium was then applied to bring out all the details. Finally Casey was coverd head to toe, and balloon, with a satin sealer to protect the paint and keep the colors vibrant for years to come.

Casey was created in my smoke free studio in sunny California.

He is 4 inches long by 4 inches side, including his balloon, and will come to you signed, dated and ready for display.

Tilly the Tightrope Walker
is all ready to make her debut after a long retirement. She's put on a little weight since her heyday, but she's willing to see if she's still got it!

Tilly was created my me, using my own home made paper clay. Her slippers were created using custom colored polymer clay.

Once cured, she was hand painted using acrylic paint. Chalks and oils were then applied to create highlights and shadows. Finally the entire piece was antiqued to bring out all the details, and then coated with a satin sealer to protect the paint and keep the colors vibrant for years to come.

Tilly was created in my smoke free studio in sunny California. She stands 6 inches tall by 4 inches wide and will come to you signed, dated and ready for display.

Helping Hand Snowbird Feeder

This funky snowbird feeder is sure to add a touch of whimsy and color to your winter garden. It features a glove-clad snowman's open hand that can be filled with birdseed to help our featherd friends through the chilly winter days. There is already a whimsical cardinal waiting to make new friends.

Helping Hand measures 8 inches by 5 inches and comes ready to hang on either a shepheard's hook or from a tree branch.

This piece was created using my own hand made paper clay over a plaster of paris cast of my own hand. Once the paint and details were completed I covered the entire piece with a two part heavy duty shellac to insure protection from rain or snow.

The Pumpkin Patch Protector is on the job making sure no one picks his friends out of the patch! The pumpkins are comfy and cozy, knowing he’s on the job.

This wacky holiday stack is sure to be a big hit with your guests this holiday season!

It cleverly blends both Halloween and Christmas, adding a touch of whimsically~funky fun to your holiday decorations.

Each member of this wacky stack is decked out in winter garb and ready to help you ring in the fall season.

This piece was created by me, using my own hand made paper clay. Once cured, this piece was then hand painted using acrylic paint.

Chalks and oils were then used to create shadows and highlights. Antiquing medium washed over the entire piece brings out all the subtle details.

Finally, a satin sealer was applied to protect the paint and keep the colors vibrant for holidays to come.

Twila Twinkletoes fancies herself a Prima Ballerina as she stands on Pointe atop her colorfully hand painted Christmas bell. Twila is all decked out in her favorite winter hat and scarf and her favorite pink ballerina toe shoes.

Lila Leapster is enjoying this Christmas season playing leap frog with her snow friends. Lila is leap-frogging over a large hand painted bell ornament. She’s staying warm wrapped in her hat, scarf and gloves. Her hat and shoes are decorated with custom colored polymer clay Christmas lights and rusty tin snowflakes. Baby rusty tin jingle bells complete the decorations.

Christine and Company

This little snowgirl is all ready for Christmas. She's even got her little kitty all decked out. She's got snowflakes and Christmas lights dangling from her knitted hat, and her kitty has one to match. At the moment she's contemplating where she wants to hang her Christmas wreath.

Christine and Co. were created by me, Kim Owens, using my own handmade paper clay. Once cured the piece was first coated with a layer of Gesso and then handpainted using acrylic paint. Chalks and oils were used to create shadows and highlights, and finally the entire piece was antiqued to bring out all the details. Lastly, the entire piece was coated with a satin finish sealer to protect the finish and keep the colors vibrant for years to come. Christine's Christmas lights and eyes were created using custom colored, or hand painted polymer clay.

Fido is so excited, he just finished decorating before his person gets home from work and now he's hopped up on his person's favorite chair waiting for the big reveal. He's so happy he can hardly wait for his person!

Fido was created by me, Kim Owens, using my own handmade paper clay along with custom colored polymer clay for the christmas lights. Once cured, Fido was painted with acrylic paint. Chalks and oils were used to create shadows and highlights and add personality, and then antiqued to bring out all the details. Madzy Frightcicle with Shire

As a member of the American Holiday Artists group I was challanged to come up with an Alice in Wonderland inspired creation. Out of that challange came this piece:

Madzy Frightcicle with Shire. Madzy is surveying his little corner of Wonderland with the help of his furry friend. Madzy is secretly hoping that Shire doesn't tire of helping him and disappear before he has a chance to climb back down from the tree.

The spooky tree was created using paper clay over a wire frame. Madzy and Shire were created using custom colored polymer clay. The pieces were then handpainted using acrylic paint and chalks, antiqued and then sealed with a satin sealer to protect the finishes.

Fritz Frightcicle
Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, Fritz Frightcicle found a bucket of gold coins and has just finished decorating his tree. And now he wants to finish his decorations with his favorite tree topper. A large Shamrock. There's only one problem. He's not quite tall enough and the toadstool he's standing on just doesn't get him quite hight enough. He'll just have to wait until the next breeze brings the top bough a little lower.

Frosta Frightcicle

Frosta Frightcicle has just finished decorating her tree for her favorite holiday, Valentine's Day. All her little Valentine ornaments are in place and now she just needs the finishing touch, a candy heart tree topper. The only problem is, Frosta is just a tad too short for the job so she's desperately hoping that the tree will bend just a tad farther so she can reach it.

Frosta was created using custom colored Polymer Clay. She's standing on a rusty christmas bell that has been secured to a hand painted wooden base. Her Christmas tree and Valentines have also been created using Polymer Clay, custom colored as well.

Frosta stands 12 inches tall by 7 inches wide.

She has been sealed with a satin sealer to protect the piece and keep the colors vibrant for years to come. The piece can be cleaned with a dry dusting cloth

Her body is created using Paper clay, and handpainted with acrylic paint, while her head, hands and shoes were created using custom colored Polymer Clay. Once baked, the entire piece is antiqued to bring out all the detail. Lilly is then sealed with a durable satin finish to protect her and keep her colors bright for years to come. Lilly's got a poly-clay Christmas tree as well as rusty snowflakes dangling from her rusty wire banner . Hanging on her stand, Lilly can be a year round addition to your snowman collection and during the Christmas season, is light enough to hang on your tree.

Clem Cadiddleflake

Clem Cadiddleflake was created using a combination of Paper Clay and Polymer Clay and is chock full of detail. His body was created using Paper clay, while the rest of the details are done with polymer clay. He's got 3 poly-clay snowfriends wearing top hats as well as 3 snowflakes dangling from his rusty wire banner. Clem also has 3rusty snowflakes springing from his top hat.

Hanging on his stand, Clem can be a year round addition to your snowman collection and during the Christmas season, will be right at home among all your holiday decorations.

Clem Cadiddleflake is 12 inches long and 12 inches high from the top of his hat to the bottom of his dangling snowfriends. His stand is 13 inches tall.

Rustyanne Snowflakersly

Rustyanne Snowflakersly is a new addition to the Wee Snow Ornies. She is much smaller than the regular Snowman Ornies but is still packed with details. She was created using a combination of Paper Clay and Polymer Clay. This combination makes for a lightweight, yet durable piece that will last for years to come.

Rustyanne's body was created using Paper Clay and then painted with acrylic paint, while her head, hat, hands and feet were created using custom colored Polymer Clay. Her dangling Christmas tree was created using polymer clay as well. Once baked and assembled, the enitre piece is antiqued to bring out all the detail and then coated with a satin sealer to protect the piece and preserve the colors. She can be cleaned with a dry dusting cloth.

Rustyanne measures 7 inches long by 4 inches and her tree is 3 inches tall. Her stand in 12 inches tall. Rustyanne on her stand will be right at home among your snowman collection and at Christmas is light enough to hang on your tree.

Fiona Flakersly

Fiona Flakersly was created using a combination of Polymer Clay and Paper Clay. This combination results in a very durable, yet lightweight piece that will last for years to come. Fiona's body and all the details on it were created with Paper Clay, and hand painted and detailed with acrylic paint. Her hand-sculpted head, hat, hands and shoes were created using Polymer Clay. She holds in her hand a bouquet of snowballs, in Polymer Clay and rusty snowflakes, held on rusty wire stems. She also has a tiny rusty bell hanging from her hat.
Fiona stands 12 inches tall by 5 inches wide and will make a wonderfully~whimsical addition to your snowman collection.

Farley McTreetoter
Farley McTreetoter was created using a combination of Paper Clay and Polymer Clay. His body is made with Paper Clay while his head, hat, mittens, trees and shoes are made with Polymer Clay. This combination makes for a light weight, yet durable sculpture that will last for years to come. Farley's hat has been adorned with rusty snowflakes, rusty bells and rusty wire. And he carries my signature heart patch on his backside. Farley is so handsome, he can be displayed all winter long, and will make a wonderful whimsically~funky addition to your snowman collection.

Farley stands at 12 inches tall and 7 inches wide.

Wee Flakester is a newcomer to the Ornie Family. He's smaller than the Witch Ornies, but is packed with just as much detail. He's made with a combination of Paper Clay and Polymer Clay and is very durable for such a wee piece. His body is created using Paper clay, while the rest of the details are done with polymer clay. He's got 3 poly-clay snowballs as well as 3 snowflakes dangling from his rusty wire banner. His stand has also been adorned with 2 additonal snowflakes attached to rusty wire. Hanging on his stand, Wee Flakester can be a year round addition to your snowman collection and during the Christmas season, he is light enough to hang on your tree.

Flakey
Flakey was created using a combinition of Paper Clay and Polymer Clay and is chock full of detail. His head, hat hands and feet are made with Polymer Clay while his body and scarf are made with Paper Clay. This combination makes for a light weight yet durable creation that will add a Whimsically~Funky Folk Art touch to your Christmas~Winter vignette.

Frosty stands 12 inches tall by 7 inches wide. He's holding a rusty wire that is strung with rusty snowflakes and Polymer Clay snowballs. I have also decorated his top hat with some rusty wire and some additonal rusty snowflakes. Frosty carries my signature patch heart on his rump.

Once baked, Flakey is then antiqued to bring out all the wonderful details. Then, sealed with a satin sealer to keep the paint and colors fresh for years to come.

Frosty was created by me, in my smoke free studio in Sunny California and will come to you signed, dated and ready for display.

Introducing 5 new Fall Pieces. The first 4 are from my newest line of Halloween Angel~Witch Ornies. Each ornie comes with its own custom created stand. These little witches are all made with lightweight Paper Clay with Polymer Clay details. Each piece is approximately 11 inches tall and 8 inches wide on their stands. Alone they are 8 inches long and 6 inches tall.
Each piece comes signed and dated and ready for display.

Cornelia comes with a rusty wire banner with little polymer clay candy corns dangling from it. Attached to a rusty wire leash and flying over her head is her very own pet bat.

Folk Art From The Heart has a new look!

I was visiting a shop in down town Walnut Creek with my husband one day, and the moment I walked in I was immediately happy. All the colors were so vivid and beautiful. And even though the items themselves weren't exactly my style, I knew I could adopt the painting technique and make it my own. So that's what I did. I started with Emily, the Celebrate Angel, and moved on from there. She looks so much better in her new clothing, now she really has something to Celebrate!

Here's Emily~ I think she's going to be my favorite piece so far.

Her hair was so fun to do and I think it makes the whole piece come together. She stands 13 inches tall and is 7 inches wide. She was created using a combination of Paper Clay for her body and arms. And Polymer Clay for the rest of her. This combination allows me to create a much larger piece, that is lighweight and easier to ship. Not to mention less expensive, which always helps. Her wings are made with rusty metal. Her necklace, halo and banner are all made with rusty wire and accented with rusty bells. The whole piece has been hand painted using acrylic paint, antiqued and then sealed with a matte sealer, and lastly sealed again with a gel sealer that gives the piece a matte finish.

A Little Something..

Live, Love, Laugh Angel Trio. This is quite a large piece made with Mixed Media. The bodies of the Angels are Paper Clay, (which I am growing more fond of every day), while the heads, arms and feet are Polymer Clay. It measures 15 inches tall by 12 inches wide. Each Angel carries a banner made using rusty wire. And each banner has a small trinket attached to it. The Angels each wear a necklace of rusty wire and rusty bells, as well as halos using the same materials. The whole piece has been antiqued and sealed and will come signed and dated.

This is Mortin Mooselstein. He's my first attempt at using mixed media. His body is made with Paper Clay. I wasn't quite sure if I was going to like it or not because I like instant gratification, and you have to wait (patiently) for the Paper Clay to dry. And then I wasn't sure if I would be able to add the detail that I love so much. But as you can see, I was! And it painted up beautifully with acrylic paint. The result being that I was able to make a much larger piece than I would normally get to make because the Paper Clay is oh so light! The rest of Mortin is of course Polymer Clay, (I'm not going to go crazy with paper, at least not yet...).

This is Ermengarde, part of my new line of Retired Helpers. Ermengarde is the retired Tooth Fairy. She's still so glamorous and in shape it's a wonder she wants to retire at all. But she still has a lot of fancy in her footwork so she wants to try her hand at something besides teeth. And who could blame her?

Ermengarde was created using custom colored Polymer Clay in my smoke free studio in Sunny California. She stands 10 inches tall and 5 inches wide.

Her accessories include a magic Tooth Fairy wand with a Magic Molar on top accented with two tiny rusty bells to scare the cavities away. She also wears a tiny rusty bell around her neck to keep the plaque at bay. She's holding two tiny teeth in her hand that she has just exchanged for quarters and is making her get-away on her thin but very spry legs.

Ermengarde will come to you signed, dated and ready for display.

She's Done....

And she's darling! I couldn't be more pleased at how she turned out! This is the first time that a piece that started in my head came out right the first time.
Meet Elfie! She's my first in a new series featuring ancient, retired helpers. She is one of Santa's oldest helpers, working for the past 200 years and she is ready for retirement. But as old as she is, she's still fit as a fiddle!

So far this is all I have completed. I have an idea how I'm going to pose her, but her shoes/feet have me stumped. This time I started backwards because I had this face in my head and wanted to get it in clay before it left, and now I have to figure out how to work from her head down. Stay tuned...

Oh Boy...

I sure hope I haven't bitten off more than I can chew. As I have told you in an earlier post, I rarely like the first [draft] of any of my sculptures. And so far my poor little cupid is no exception. He's already lost his arms and his sash and but lucky for him, I like his feet. He's now got eyes and hair and a cute set of wings. So I'll be continuing on to reconstruct his arms and this time I may even add his hands! Stay tuned.

In my never quite satisfied but constant, self imposed challenge, to create the perfect sculpture, (or at least my own version of it), it seems my quest has led me to yet another fork in the road. My direction of choice still seems to be strongly toward the whimsical rather than the realistic. So in that vein, I am working on my own representation of cupid. So far, he's coming along nicely. Stay tuned to see how he will turn out. I'm curious myself, because my pieces seem to evolve on their own and with very little help from me.

From Conception to Completion

The making of Finial Santa Begins with an idea. I never draw anything first like normal artists do because, for one thing, I can't draw. And for another, my piece rarely turns out like my original idea. The piece evolves during the creation process and I almost always hate the first attempt. In this case, while I'm not overly fond of the first attempt, I thought I'd share it with you anyway, since I went to all the trouble of documenting the process. And while I do love Santa's face on this piece, the body didn't turn out exactly the way I wanted it to. But here it goes anyway.

This is how every piece starts.
With a foil core.
This is the beginning of Santa's Boots.

The foil Core gets covered
with a layer of Polymer Clay.

The tops of the boots are added
and strengthened with wooden dowels.

Lastly, the details are added.
Then it goes into the oven for 15 minutes.

While the boots are baking,

it's time to work on the body.

It also begins with a foil core.

The first layer is added and textured.

I bake between layers so

I don't loose the texture

while I am adding the next layers.

The process is repeated

for the next two layers.

Time for the head,

then the fun begins!

Now for the nose and lips.

I like to make them as large

as possible. I think it makes

the piece more whimsical.

Then I add the beard and

usually a moustache, but

in this case, I added hair

instead of a moustache.

The beard and hair get their

texture too. Aren't those

lips to die for?

The hat is added and

then the finishing touches.

Lastly, I antique the intire

piece to bring out all the detail.
Once the antiquing medium

is dry I add the blush tint to

the lips and cheeks.

Then I sign and date the piece.

Have you ever felt the need to clean?

Well this morning I sat down at my computer to do some promo work, when all of a sudden I was overwhelmed with all the icons on my desk top. Not only do I have a bazillion shortcuts, but they all look the same. I decided right then and there I needed to change that. So off I went into cyberspace to find an Icon maker so I could make cute little pictures for each of my shortcuts. 3 hours later, my desktop looked much better. Then I noticed that my handy-dandy Icon maker also makes cute little teenie pictures to replace the myriad of folders in the various drives on my computer. Well, 6 hours later, I have lots and lots of cute little pictures on my desktop and cute little teenie pictures that replaced the boring file icons on my computer, and, well, nothing else done. But my computer is a lot more fun to look at!

Since I'm back from my Break...

I thought I'd show you what all the hoopla was about. These are my darling Baby Grands.

This is Grace, and she is every bit as smart as she is adorable. She will be 3 in November.

And this is Joshua, her baby brother.
He is 6 months old, and oh so sweet.

I was babysitting them for the summer while my daughter and son-in-law made preparations to move to Iowa, which is why I was on such an extended break.
As most of you know, we were planning to move to Iowa this summer. As a matter of fact we were supposed to be there already. But my lovely sister-in-law, who was supposed to be the executor of the estate my in-laws left behind, not only spent her share of the inheritance, but ours as well. So it was with a heavy heart and many, many tears, that I had to say goodbye to my sweet baby grands and watch them, with their parents, move to Iowa without me and my husband.

But all is not lost, because we have God on our side and He will help us see the good that He has in mind for us through this very difficult time. We have been able to recover a portion of the money that was stolen by my sister-in-law, and in due time we will be able to move to Iowa as well, so I am trying to use my time wisely and constructively, so I won't dwell on all the after-affects of what my sister-in-law has done, but rest in the fact that God is in control and in the end, what He has in store for us will be much better than anything we could have come up with.

And now my daughter is expecting her 3rd baby, another son, so that's one more blessing we have to look forward to.
